This is in response to: Engadget. And about Japanese schoolgirls.
And I’m NOT holding on to an iPhone. (I took this photos when I’m super sick btw, I’m now just waiting for my chicken soup)
You know, I don’t have an iPhone. What?!! Yes I have everything else Apple, a unibody MacBook, two iPod Touches, an AirPort Express, and no iPhone. Heck, I even have the iPhone SDK on my computer because I’m experimenting with a couple of things and I’m still on the Apple Developer Program.
So why?
I think its an awesome product. And with the iPhone OS 3.0 I think its going to be an insanely awesome product, I can already think of a dozen of things possible with the Game Kit. The demo of all the new apps possible with the 17 March 09 iPhone Event was a nice thing and Sims 3 (and StarCraft 2) is going to take over my life when it is released.
There are just two things about it….
One. The plan.
The cheapest plan currently available in the Netherlands is with T-Mobile and costs 29.90EUR with 150 minutes / 150 smses and unlimited 3G. It is supposedly the cheapest in Europe. You get locked into it for 2 years and you get to buy the iPhone 3G 8GB for about 79.95EUR. So it costs in total 439.35EUR.
An iPod Touch costs about 219EUR and there is free Internet on the High Tech Campus. My simonly plan costs 4.95EUR a month. In total it costs: 337.80EUR.
So I save more than 100EUR over the course of two years.
and more so…
Two. The size.
So maybe I do fall into the category of Japanese schoolgirl. I like my phones cute small and sparkly and bling, and its not just me, its a gazillion girls in Asia as well because we want to be all bright cute and shiny. The iPhone is great, but its huge, and would never fill into my pocket especially if you throw on a cover on it to protect the ultra-scratchable casing. So I want to look all flashy opening my flip-phone like this:
We all know that Nokia literally LOST some of the market and caved in finally because they would only offer candy-cane type phones. And I like to see my LG Ice-Cream plastered to my face with my shiny bling than the iPhone. So we’ll see that again… So, some of you don’t understand it. But for the statistics, when I tried to get the LG Ice Cream in Singapore one month after its release, PINK was sold out island-wide. The iPhone just doesn’t cut it for the kawaii factor.
Then again, I think for this I only form a tiny fraction of the demographics. So I’ll stick with my iPod Touch for now, but if Apple ever offers the iPhone in pink, I’m going to be the first one to buy it! So yes, there is INDEED a huge demographics of shiny electronics for girls in Asia, trust me on this!
There you go again: Engadget.

Hi, Summerrainx. I totally agree with you about the iPhone – and I love the iPod Touch, too. Have you checked out the LG Lotus? I went through 3 phones in a couple of weeks, but once I got the Lotus, I knew it was the one for me. It’s compact, SQUARE and a pretty purple color. =)
Hi Tina,
I took a peak at the LG Lotus… I like the flowers on the purple! And I know the feeling of finding ‘the one’, I returned a few phones because they were too manly as well!
Summer
I was resistant to the iPhone as well…It may not be cute and cuddly, but can’t you find a cute and cuddly iPhone carrier to bling it up:? Once I finally started using one I had landed for free, I realized that it goes beyond functioning phone. It identifies with you…If it had legs, it would be like one of those girl femme bots in the Chobits Anime. It truly takes care of me and supplements my life in a way no other phone could. I am officially a slag for Steve Jobs…
The girl femme bots in Chobits? You are a geek! Haha…
It was a long time ago…and I’m still waiting for Japan to pick up the slack…Those Japanese are so lazy.
